Understanding Lace Density, Knotting, and Bleaching

Most lace education focuses on lace type alone, but that only explains part of the result. How a lace install looks in real life is determined by how the lace is constructed, ventilated, and finished.

These factors affect realism, customization needs, and long-term durability.

Lace Density

Lace density refers to how much hair is tied into the lace section. This is separate from overall wig density or bundle count.

Higher lace density creates a fuller front that often requires plucking to soften the hairline. Lower lace density appears more natural immediately but offers less volume at the front.

Chroma uses a moderate lace density that allows for shaping without over-removal. The intent is flexibility rather than pre-styled excess.

Knot Size and Placement

Hair strands are tied into lace using knots. The size and spacing of these knots influence grid visibility and how easily they blend.

Smaller knots are less visible and easier to lighten. Larger knots are more durable but may require more customization. Single knots lay flatter but are more delicate. Double knots offer longevity but sit higher on the lace.

Well-constructed lace uses a mix of knot types. Finer knotting is used at the front hairline, with stronger knotting further back to maintain structure. Chroma lace follows this approach consistently.

Bleaching Knots

Bleaching knots lightens the knot base so it blends into the lace and mimics scalp tone. It is optional and depends on styling preference.

Over-bleaching weakens knots. Some knot structures lift easily, while others require more time or heat. High quality HD lace with small knots may not need bleaching at all when paired with proper foundation techniques.

Some stylists prefer tinting, scalp makeup, or wig caps instead. What matters is that the knot structure supports the chosen method.
